The Symbolic Meaning of the Number Ten

By Richard J Oldale,
February 16, 2020

The symbolic meaning of the number ten signifies a cycle of life has ended and a new cycle has begun. The one and the zero are reunited whereby energy has taken a full course and transformed – or stayed the same.

How energy transforms is determined by how you generate energy and project it into the world. Everything is energy and at some point, that energy has to break forth to become a physical reality. It’s worth bearing in mind that thoughts, emotions and actions are energies that determine how you create your experience of the world, and ultimately, your life.

“The way we use that consciousness – the way we direct our awareness – produces profound and immediate changes in the atoms and molecules of our bodies. Science also shows us that our consciousness affects the material reality around us. As our consciousness changes, so changes the world.” ~ Dawson Church, Mind To Matter

Pythagoreans say the ten denotes completeness, finality and perfection because when you arrive at the decad you return to the monad.

For Pythagoras, the number 10 was held with the highest esteem. The famous Greek mathematician called it the ‘perfect number”. He recognised the ten comprehends harmonic proportions and said it was both heaven and the world because the former includes the latter.

What Pythagoras means by heaven is the mind and what he means by the world is physical reality. When you see 10’s appearing in your life, take note of the experience your having because that is the physical reality you have manifested.

Is it a good experience or a bad experience?

I’m going to tell you a story that I published in the Numbers Symbolism Guide. At the end of each number, I relate a true story that gives you an example of how to interpret the number. Tens are generally easy to interpret. The following story was confirmation to me that number symbolism really works!

I used to have a lack of patience with people. One day, I needed to catch a train. I can’t mention the place of origin or the destination because the government of the country in question made me sign a declaration that forbids me to publish content about the country.

Let’s just say I was in Never Never Land.

The ticket office at the train station was packed. And chaotic. There were about ten tellers open, all of which had long queues around 15 people deep. I joined a queue and waited for twenty minutes before I reached the desk. The teller told me I needed a service number to buy a train ticket and pointed to a machine.

This machine produced tickets with numbers on them. You may be familiar with such as toicketing system in waiting rooms of establishments that do not have queues. Here they have queuing system and a number system. Genius! I have no idea why there is any need for a ticketing system, but hey-ho, this is what happens when we allow men in suits to make the rules. Just saying.

Anyway, I took a service ticket and rejoined in the same queue I’d just left, I waited another twenty minutes. When I got to the front of the queue and asked to buy a train ticket to my target destination, the teller told me that tickets for that destination were only available from a another counter. He could have told me that 20 minutes ago, but he chose not to. And another ridiculous rule to boot.

So I waited for another 20 minutes. This time when I reached the teller, I was told there were no trains for my destination until Tuesday. It was Saturday. After being messed about and waiting in chaos for an hour, I lost my patience. “Oh fuck it,” I said and stormed off. In those days, I could be quite petulant – even at the age of 39.

I decided to take the bus. That was a mistake. It was a four day journey – and I had hepatitis A.

During the journey, I kept seeing the number ten. I was given bed no. 10 on two different buses and on the morning of day three also had room number 10 in a hotel I stayed in to get some sleep ahead of another overnight bus journey. It was in this hotel room that I had my first revelation about how to use the symbolic meaning of numbers to my advantage.

After about 54-hours of travelling, I was tired, dirty and in desperate need of sleep. To top it off, I had a piercing pain in my stomach and was practically bursting.

As it happens, burst is exactly what I did.

Squatting over the toilet (a hole in the ground) my arse exploded – all over my legs and jeans.

Needless to say, I was not in a good place. It dawned on me at this point that I needed to know what the number 10 meant.

By this point, I’d already started taking an active interest in esoteric symbolism and had started writing down the meaning of symbols and numbers. When I consulted my notes, I discovered the number 10 meant that the end of one cycle had ended and another had begun.

Life moves in cycles. The energy you put into a cycle, manifests as physical reality after various stages of completion, namely 4, 7 and 10. The Law of Cause and Effect, or karma, is important to remember between each sequence. In room 10, I asked myself, what did I do to create this moment? The answer was obvious: impatience and petulance.

So I performed a solar plexus healing mediation to dissolve impatience and petulance.

The next night – after another eight hours on a bus – I arrived in the next town needing a hotel. I grabbed a tuk-tuk from outside the station and he took me to three hotels. Three times I was asked where I was from. When I said I was British, three times I was refused.

Despite the rejection and subsequent inconvenience, I remained calm. What’s more, my inner-knowing told me this was a test. As this dawned on me, sat in the back of a tuk-tuk in Never Never Land, I laughed and literally felt a wave of calm wash over me.

For the first time in years, I felt what it was like to experience inner peace.

The next hotel gave me a room. It was the most expensive room they had but by this time, I didn’t care. I had suffered a hard lesson but I eventually came to a moment of self-realisation – and all because of the recurring number 10.

The room number they gave me at the hotel was 303 – 33. This number is symbolic for self-mastery.

I’ve never had a problem with impatience or petulance since.

Students and practitioners of number symbolism may also have noticed the three in this story. Three times I waited. Three times I was refused a room.

Peter denies Jesus three times.

As a matter of fact, threes show up all the time in mythology and symbolism. There’s a reason for that which I explain in this article titled: Why Three is the Magic Number.

The Symbolic Meaning of the Number Ten in the Bible

Generally speaking, the 10 marks the end of one cycle of time and the beginning of the next. But as Pythagoras noted, it is also an expression of human knowledge – because matter (4) comes into “harmony” (6) with the world.

Harmony is associated with a happy marriage between man and women; the alchemical marriage. Man is mind, women is matter. Mind becomes matter.

Every one of our thoughts, good or bad, becomes concrete, materialises, and becomes in short, a reality. We are what we make ourselves and not what circumstances make us.” ~ Emile Coue, Self-Mastery Through Conscious Autosuggestion

In the Bible, the ten is associated with law and judgement – symbolised by the Ten Commandments which give man guidance to rights and wrongs.

On a deeper level, this eludes to the laws of nature which ultimately manifest in life. The ‘Judgement of God” determines the destiny of an individual in accordance with their merits and demerits.

The ten is essentially the result of previous thoughts, actions and emotions. Something happens, but whatever happens is the lesson you need to learn.

This end and new beginning of energy cycles can be a physical manifestation in your life or a deeper understanding of the inner-self.

Because the 10 contains the energies of the number one and the zero, it’s more powerful and vibrant than either of the single digits on its own. The severity or joy of the outcome depends on the energy transmitted in the earlier stages.

We find the symbolic meaning of the number ten associated with the Wheel of Fortune in the tarot deck. In numerology, the 10 also carries the element of luck. But this can be fortunate or unfortunate depending on the energy the individual projects.

From a positive perspective, the ten augurs an air of confidence, optimism, creative power, success and the ability to adapt to your new circumstances.

However, to benefit from the positive powers of the 10 you must show determination and leadership qualities – in other words, take ownership for your thoughts, emotions and actions.

The Negative Aspects of the number Ten

All numbers and symbols have a positive and negative outlook which are the opposing duality of the other. The negative ten, therefore, resembles an individual who is pessimistic, lacking confidence and unable to recognise their true power and potential.

Ultimately, negative manifestation leaves a person unfulfilled and consistent failures can lead to self-righteousness and arrogance in order to cover up deep-seated frustrations.

As I found from my own experience, the number 10 can guide you to a moment of self-realisation. It was after seeing the synchronicity of tens that I first realised numbers and symbols serve a significantly meaningful purpose.

If the goal you set out to achieve fails, or you have a bad experience, consider which thoughts, actions and emotions caused the outcome. How have you been behaving lately? What energies did you transmit? You will probably find they were negative – thus resulting in a negative outcome.

If you are seeing the repetition of tens, your unconscious is sending a signal that you have started a fresh cycle and are setting out along the path of the unknown as symbolised by the card of The Fool in the tarot

This new start – especially if the manifestation is physical – may be a continuation of what you already know and you must choose whether to continue doing what you’re doing or if something problematic has manifested in your life you should take a look at where it might have gone wrong.
